I Am With You…

Acrylic by a Family Member, Friend or Caregiver
Puerto Rico

I work as an Auditor at a few hospitals. Although I am not in direct contact with patients, I have met a few. They include children with cancer and they were my inspiration for this work. My work is dedicated to all children who are cancer patients for their defiance and strength to continue fighting, qualities given to them by their mothers, through their unconditional and loving company.

“I Am With You…” is a work inspired by and dedicated to children who have cancer. Their strength and attitude in the face of adversity is incredible to me. Their will to live and fight shines when they have their mothers, their loving companions, by their side. Their mothers are always there, unconditionally in space and time, in spite of their profound sadness.

The work attempts to stress how important the support of families is in the fight against cancer, whether we are young or old. “If you are with me, I can bear anything…” is an expression we hear time and time again…The colors blue, white, pink and black express confidence, the great love we have of our childhood, surrounded by nighttime and sadness.

The acrylic painting on the cover of this issue is entitled “I Am With You…” was created an entrant in the 2006 Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey International Art Competition and Exhibition.

Oncology on Canvas was created by Eli Lilly and Company as a way to honour the journeys people take when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The program invited people diagnosed with any type of cancer, their families and friends, cancer advocates, healthcare providers, as well as artists and art students to express, through art and in narrative, their own cancer journeys.

The inaugural competition in 2004 received nearly 500 entries from 23 countries and the 2006 competition received more than 2,000 entries from 43 countries. All winners were awarded a monetary donation to the cancer charity of their choice.

The rich and enduring collection of art is travelling the world and continues to touch the hearts and minds of people everywhere.

Current Oncology is committed to the Canadian oncology community as well as oncology communities around the world. We are pleased to help raise awareness of this great program created by Lilly. Current Oncology will be selecting a new artwork for each cover from previous and upcoming competitions.
