The Storm”
Acrylic by a Person Diagnosed with Cancer

Something stirs inside of me,
Trapped,
Fighting for control,
Desperate for release,
Just like me.

Where does it end?
Where do I begin?
We are intertwined,
Like lovers.
But without the love.

Deep inside
A corner of my soul
Whispers echo,
You are not alone.

Within the eye
Of my raging storm,
I am not alone.

And it is enough.

The artwork featured on the cover of this issue and its accompanying narrative was created by a person diagnosed with cancer from the 2012 Lilly Oncology On Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey Art Competition and Exhibition.

Oncology On CanvasSM is an art competition and exhibition that honors the journeys people face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. This biennial competition invites people from the United States and Puerto Rico diagnosed with any type of cancer—as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers—to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning. Since 2004, the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship has been the co-presenter of the Lilly Oncology On Canvas Art Competition and Exhibition.

The 2014 competition is now open! To register, download a submission form and see artwork from previous competitions please visit www.lillyoncologyoncanvas.com.
