“Cancer: The Invisible Threat”
Oil by a Family, Friend or Caregiver
Puerto Rico

The key thought of my work is PRECAUTION. I show a healthy, happy, easy-going woman who nonetheless is constantly exposed to the INVISIBLE THREAT of this terrible, unfortunately common DISEASE, filling one of her main roles in life, which is motherhood. I show the mother and the CONTINUATION of life, the woman always illuminated by a ray of HOPE and with the certainty of overcoming adversity.

I experienced this disease through a very dear friend who I admired and who was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. This experience has helped me reaffirm that we are wonderful spiritual beings who, faced with adversity, put on impenetrable armor of strength and love that lets us make important decisions in the fight for our lives and to fight with optimism and learn to value every thing and every situation for what it’s worth.

The oil painting on the cover of this issue is entitled “Cancer: The Invisible Threat” and was created by a family member, friend or caregiver from Puerto Rico. The selection was an entrant in the 2006 Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey International Art Competition and Exhibition.

Oncology on Canvas was created by Eli Lilly and Company as a way to honour the journeys people take when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The program invited people diagnosed with any type of cancer, their families and friends, cancer advocates, healthcare providers, as well as artists and art students to express, through art and in narrative, their own cancer journeys.

The inaugural competition in 2004 received nearly 500 entries from 23 countries and the 2006 competition received more than 2,000 entries from 43 countries. All winners were awarded a monetary donation to the cancer charity of their choice.

The rich and enduring collection of art is travelling the world and continues to touch the hearts and minds of people everywhere.

Current Oncology is committed to the Canadian oncology community as well as oncology communities around the world. We are pleased to help raise awareness of this great program created by Lilly. Current Oncology will be selecting a new artwork for each cover from previous and upcoming competitions.
