About the cover: In My Arms…; Photography by a Family Member, Friend or Caregiver

I met her on the internet in 1999. I knew I had finally found my soul mate. Five years later, we got married and had the greatest honeymoon anyone could ever ask for: Madrid and Paris. Everything went perfectly, until December 2, 2005; we were diagnosed with breast cancer. We simply couldn’t believe this was happening.

I could only think about dedicating myself to do everything possible in order to help her. I spent day and night with her: a lumpectomy, four quimiotherapies, a mastectomy, one quimiotherapy, twenty eight radiotherapies, a hysterectomy...and many nights of pain.

As time went by, I realized the true reasons behind many things. It was clear to me that God wanted me to meet her and get to know my wife so I could take care of her and love her through all the good times and the bad times. He made sure I got in her path of life to help and carry her throughout this difficult disease. At the same time, it is this experience that has made our relationship stronger than anyone could ever imagine.

This art signifies how I have taken in my arms my beautiful wife and how at the same time she is happy about it. I say beautiful wife because even if she lost one breast, she is the most gorgeous, courageous and intelligent woman I have ever met. I Love You...

The photography on the cover of this issue is entitled “In My Arms…” and was entry by a Family Member, Friend or Caregiver in the 2008 Lilly Oncology On Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey Art Competition and Exhibition.

Oncology On Canvas was created by Eli Lilly and Company as a way to honour the journeys people take when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The program invited people diagnosed with any type of cancer, their families and friends, cancer advocates, healthcare providers, as well as artists and art students to express, through art and in narrative, their own cancer journeys.

All winners were awarded a monetary donation to the cancer charity of their choice.

The rich and enduring collection of art is travelling the world and continues to touch the hearts and minds of people everywhere.

Current Oncology is committed to the Canadian oncology community as well as oncology communities around the world. We are pleased to help raise awareness of this great program created by Eli Lilly. Current Oncology will be selecting a new artwork for each cover from previous and upcoming competitions.
