";Gazing to the Stars";

Oil by a Healthcare Provider
United States

";If I don't make it in time, tell Dad I love him."; I remember my sister saying this when we called her from the hospital. She lived in another state and his imminent death of a heart attack meant she might not get to see him that one last time to tell him herself. I was able to make that connection with my Father which has always left me with the feeling that he is watching and caring for me from above.

What does this have to do with cancer? I am a Pharmacy Technician. I routinely mix the ";chemo."; I feel that what I do helps patients fight and hopefully live on. A ";statistically significant"; survival time might seem small to some, but to me even a few days, weeks or months have a great impact. One also knows that we cannot help everyone. I can only hope that we have at least given them enough time to say good-bye or ";;connect.";; Maybe even enough time to see that child or grandchild born, walk their daughter down the aisle or to be at any of life's major events. It is a really great day when I hear that a patient ";graduates"; from treatment.

This Stargazer Lilly is one that my Mother grew and that my Father photographed some 30 plus years ago. It is one of my Mother's favorites. I have recently begun to paint and love to paint from my Father's photographs. It is one more way for me to ";;connect";; and to feel that he isn't really gone. My Father loved to photograph flowers at night to get the black background. This particular photo wasn't done at night but I painted it on a black background and I call this ";Gazing to the Stars.";

The oil painting on the cover of this issue is entitled ";Gazing to the Stars"; and was created by an entrant in the 2006 Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey International Art Competition and Exhibition.

Oncology on Canvas was created by Eli Lilly and Company as a way to honour the journeys people take when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The program invited people diagnosed with any type of cancer, their families and friends, cancer advocates, healthcare providers, as well as artists and art students to express, through art and in narrative, their own cancer journeys.

The inaugural competition in 2004 received nearly 500 entries from 23 countries and the 2006 competition received more than 2,000 entries from 43 countries. All winners were awarded a monetary donation to the cancer charity of their choice.

The rich and enduring collection of art is travelling the world and continues to touch the hearts and minds of people everywhere.

Current Oncology is committed to the Canadian oncology community as well as oncology communities around the world. We are pleased to help raise awareness of this great program created by Lilly. Current Oncology will be selecting a new artwork for each cover from previous and upcoming competitions.
